INFORMATION SYSTEM SECURITY ANALYST

Salary: 119 - $43,548.00 minimum salary.

SECTION I-JOB DESCRIPTION

SUMMARY: (State Purpose and General Responsibilities)

Cameron County IT Department is looking for an entry-level Security Analyst to join our growing IT Security Team, under the direction of the Chief Technology Officer and supervision of the Chief Information Security Officer. Daily tasks typically include the support on information security processes, monitoring of network anomalies and implementing cybersecurity safeguards to protect computer systems, networks, and data. Information security analysts are expected to stay up-to-date on the latest intelligence, including hackers' methodologies, to anticipate security breaches.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :( State the fundamental duties and tasks)

  1. Monitor security logs, events, and statuses on security appliances.
  2. Performs routine updates and patches on datacenter hardware, network devices, and endpoints
  3. Maintain a general working knowledge of all security and in-house enhancements. Install, maintain and evaluate new releases of security software.
  4. Performs the same duties as the Communication Technician and Network Administrator as necessary.
  5. Performs security scans and remediation as required.
  6. Adheres to an off-hour stand-by or on-call status as required.
  7. Develop and maintain Incident response procedures for all platforms in the county.
  8. Compile and submit regular reports of NOC security environment status.
  9. Conduct periodic network monitoring and intrusion detection analysis to determine if there have been any attacks on the system
  10. Analyze network traffic to identify anomalies and test the information security controls for weakness.
  11. When malicious activity has been detected in the system, must act immediately to contain the activity and mitigate the damage.
  12. Facilitate forensics analysis to determine the source of the threat.
  13. Prepare various documentation including project reports, information security policies, user manuals, presentations, strategic and technical design and other related information on assigned application analyses.
  14. Maintain documentation for security operations and procedures.
  15. Design and implement new safeguards to protect computer systems, work with other IT teams to implement the new safeguards, whether it is in the form of software, hardware, or new operating procedures.
  16. Conduct research, and attend conferences, professional association meetings and technical symposia to gain awareness of the latest information security technological developments.
  17. Develop project timelines and identify project tasks and procedures.
  18. Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Information Officer.

SECTION II-JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor's Degree in Computer Technology, Computer Information Systems or Computer Science. Four years' work experience in a data center or computer technical support shop or department; OR any combination of training, education, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Experience and knowledge of fundamental principles of network operating systems, and Network LAN/WAN/Security equipment commensurate with Cisco's CCNA and/or Network+ / Security+ certifications.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have a valid Texas Driver's License and good driving record. Must have and maintain a clean TCIC/NCIC records check.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical requirements include lifting/carrying 5-100 lbs. Subject to working in awkward positions, within ceilings, walls, and other crawl spaces. Will require loading and unloading cargo on County pickup or other transportation vehicles. Will also require, sitting, walking, standing, bending, reaching and twisting to perform the essential job functions.

CONTACTS: (Nature of contacts, external relationships, and internal relationships.)

Utilizes tact when dealing with Elected/Appointed Officials, Division/Department Heads, County employees, and the general public regarding departmental operational issues.

External Contacts: Frequent contact with vendors including distributors, market researchers, and computer resources. Occasional contact with other governmental agencies, outside organizations, and the General Public.

Internal Contacts: Moderate contact with Elected/Appointed Officials, Division/Department Heads. Frequent contact with subordinates, co-workers, and other County employees. Communication is face-to-face, via telephone and through written correspondence.

RESPONSIBILITY: (Supervision is given, accountability, safety, budgeting, spending authority and confidentiality.)

The job has a critical impact on the Information Services Department operations and public image. Primary external responsibility is providing hardware support to County departments and personnel. Primary internal responsibility is providing supervision to the network Support Team consisting of the Network and Communications Specialists team.

DIFFICULTY: (Judgement, initiative, and decision-making.)

Judgment is required to ensure completion of administrative activities and special projects as assigned by the Chief Information Officer. Uses discretion to achieve work goals. The initiative is constantly required to achieve work goals.

GUIDANCE: (Supervision received and level of independence.)

The employee receives direction from Chief Information Officer to perform essential functions. Employee develops unique solutions for completing work assignments working within the bounds of common business practices.

WORKING CONDITION :( Describe the working environment and other conditions of employment.)

Working conditions consist within the County Courthouse complex and all remote, satellite, and annex buildings within Cameron County.


This position is subject to a six (6) month probationary period prior to Civil Service eligibility. Must submit to a Civil Service Clerical Exam.
